Anxiety Treatment

Perfectionism and anxiety go hand in hand. Deep down, it’s less about being perfect and more about making sure you’re never criticized or, even worse, rejected.  The same goes for people-pleasing.  If these have been your go-to strategies, you probably live in fear of being exposed as a fraud or being abandoned.  You probably live in fear - period.

Anxiety makes your world smaller and smaller.  You avoid taking risks, speaking your mind, or making any choice that may cost you people’s approval.  But the cost of playing it safe in these ways is even greater.  You learn to ignore your own feelings and needs and become completely disconnected from yourself.

Is this Anxiety or am I Type A?

Anxiety can look different for different people.  You might have a mind that never rests, always on guard for the next thing that could go wrong.  Other people experience it more in their bodies, with chronic digestive problems, headaches, or muscle pain.  Other ways it shows up are:

  • Constant worrying about the future

  • Second-guessing your decisions and replaying past conversations

  • Obsessing about what others think of you

  • Workaholism and an inability to enjoy unstructured time

  • Difficulty coping with uncertainty

  • Turning to drinking to manage in social situations

More than likely, you’ve probably been struggling with anxiety for a long time. Your family and friends tell you to “just relax” or “let it go.”  If it were that easy, you would have taken their advice long ago.

You may have come to believe that it’s just part of who you are and that you had to live with it. But it’s so exhausting. And there are days when you feel like you’re going crazy.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

How Anxiety Treatment Can Help

At my Washington, DC-area therapy practice, I work with clients to overcome the anxiety that’s been standing in the way of the full and engaged lives that they yearn for. Most people that seek out an anxiety therapist have already tried something:  self-help books, yoga and exercise, relaxing spa retreats, or maybe even medication.

I know that (unfortunately) there is no easy fix, despite what all sorts of advertisers want to tell you. I believe that lasting relief from anxiety comes from digging deep to get to the root of the problem.

Working with an anxiety therapist can help you uncover the mistaken beliefs that fuel your anxiety.

Our work will also help you cultivate the strength and inner trust you need to challenge this faulty thinking and stand up to the fears that have taken over your life.

But I also understand that you want relief now.  That’s why I balance the deeper work that we’ll do with giving you practical strategies and tools to start managing the intense feelings.  I draw from many different modalities and traditions, including neuroscience, mindfulness and Buddhism, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  Together we’ll work to equip you with both insight and skills for you to find the peace of mind you long for.
